Can you add a battery to an existing solar system?
Usually yes, and the question that decides how straightforward it will be is not the battery. It is the inverter you already have on the wall.
Start with the inverter
Your existing inverter determines most of what follows. If it is a hybrid inverter, it was built with storage in mind and a battery can generally connect to it directly. If it is a standard solar inverter, which many systems more than a few years old have, the battery needs its own way in.
Age matters too. An inverter is the part of a solar system most likely to need replacing first, and if yours is well into its life, spending money to build around it is worth thinking about carefully.
AC-coupled and DC-coupled, in plain English
These two terms come up immediately in any retrofit conversation and they are simpler than they sound.
DC-coupled means the battery connects on the same side as the panels, before the power has been converted for use in the house. It generally needs a hybrid inverter, so on a retrofit it usually means replacing the inverter you have.
AC-coupled means the battery brings its own inverter and connects on the house side, alongside your existing system. Your current inverter stays where it is and keeps doing its job. This is the more common retrofit route, because it works with what is already there.
The practical trade is that AC coupling converts the power an extra time on its way into the battery, so a little is lost in the process, while DC coupling avoids that but usually means replacing a working inverter. Which one comes out ahead depends on the age and type of what you have, and any installer quoting a retrofit should be able to explain which they are proposing and why.
Is your array big enough to fill it?
A battery is mostly filled by surplus solar. Some setups can also be configured to charge from the grid on a cheap overnight rate, which is worth asking about, but surplus is the everyday case. If your existing system is modest and your household uses most of what it generates during the day, there may not be much left over to charge a battery with, and a large battery can spend a lot of its life part-full.
Look at how much you are currently exporting. If the answer is very little, the honest conversation is about adding panels, not storage, or about doing both.
Size the battery to what you have, not to what you would buy new
Retrofit sizing is a different exercise to sizing a fresh system. You are working with a fixed array and a known export pattern rather than designing both together. The result is often a smaller battery than the same household would be sold alongside a new installation, and that is the right answer rather than a compromise.
Backup is a separate decision
Storing power and keeping the lights on in a blackout are not the same feature. Backup needs additional wiring and usually covers selected circuits rather than the whole house. If it matters to you, say so early, because it affects which batteries suit and what the installation involves. If it does not, do not pay for it.
Switchboard and space
A retrofit adds equipment, and it has to go somewhere. Wall space near the switchboard, and the condition of the board itself, both come into it. On older homes around Essendon, Niddrie and the post-war streets through Sunshine and St Albans, board work is a reasonably common part of the job and should be quoted rather than discovered.
When replacing the inverter is the better move
If your inverter is old, or if the system is small enough that you are adding panels as well, replacing it with a hybrid and starting cleanly can work out better than building around it. The test is whether you are spending money to preserve a component that is going to need replacing anyway.
Brand compatibility narrows the field
Not every battery pairs with every inverter, and manufacturers publish compatibility lists. This is worth knowing early because it can rule out a battery you had in mind, or make one you had not considered the obvious choice. If an installer proposes a combination, ask whether both manufacturers list it as supported.
The rebate does not work how most people assume
