Fox ESS vs GoodWe: which battery, for which house

Aussie Solar Info · Prices from this site's own calculator; facts checked against the sources below, 2026-10-27

Fox ESS and GoodWe are two of the batteries most often quoted side by side in Australia. Fox ESS is value tier on this site and GoodWe mid tier, so the question is what the extra money buys.

Price, before and after the federal discount

BrandBatteryInstalled, before rebatesAfter rebates (VIC)
Fox ESS10 kWh$7,650 to $13,500$5,130 to $10,980
Fox ESS15 kWh$12,100 to $18,000$8,420 to $14,320
Fox ESS27 kWh$16,470 to $28,000$10,980 to $22,510
GoodWe10 kWh$8,420 to $14,850$5,900 to $12,330
GoodWe15 kWh$13,310 to $19,800$9,630 to $16,120
GoodWe27 kWh$18,120 to $30,800$12,630 to $25,310

Prices are installed, from the same calculator the free assessment uses, scaled by each brand's tier. The federal battery discount is the same whichever brand you choose, because it is set by usable capacity and install date, not by brand[1]. Western Australia adds up to $1,300 for Synergy customers on top.

The ranges, from the approved list

Both brands have several battery series on the Clean Energy Council approved list. Fox ESS lists, among others, the EQ4800 series from 9.32 to 41.93kWh usable, the CQ6 and CQ7 series reaching 83.86 and 97.44kWh, and the newer EQ5500 and Power Cube series. GoodWe lists the Lynx F G2 from 9.6 to 28.8kWh, smaller Lynx D and U units around 5kWh, and 60 to 90kWh units for larger sites[2].

For a normal house, both cover the 10 to 15kWh range most people need, and both can be expanded. Where they differ is above that: Fox ESS has more approved series and larger stacks.

Warranty, read carefully

GoodWe's Australian warranty for the Lynx F G2 gives 10 years of product warranty and 10 years of performance warranty, at 70% of usable capacity or a minimum energy throughput. For the last five years of the product warranty, GoodWe covers hardware material costs only[3]. That last detail is the one to ask an installer about: who pays for labour in years six to ten.

Fox ESS's EQ4800 carries a 10-year warranty based on energy throughput, which Fox ESS has described as working out to about 4,100 full cycles at 100% depth of discharge[4]. Read the current warranty document for the exact model on your quote, because terms are set per series.

Which inverter decides it

Both batteries are high-voltage stacks that pair with their own maker's hybrid inverters. On a new system that is a free choice. On an existing system it is not: if you already have a GoodWe hybrid inverter, a GoodWe battery is usually the simple add-on, and the same goes for Fox ESS. A quote that swaps your inverter to fit its preferred battery should show you that cost.

So which

Fox ESS if the decision is financial: on the same stored energy, the cheaper pack pays back faster, and its range goes larger if you want room to grow. GoodWe if you already have a GoodWe inverter, or if a specific feature or installer relationship makes the mid-tier price worth it to you. What should not decide it is a savings projection that shows one saving materially more than the other on the same capacity: the storage does the same job either way.

Get your own numbers, then get them priced properly

Two minutes of questions gets you the battery size your house actually needs, what it should cost after rebates, and what it saves. Then I find the bottom of that price range for you. No installer sees anything unless you ask.

Common questions

Is Fox ESS cheaper than GoodWe?

On this site's pricing, yes: Fox ESS is value tier and GoodWe mid tier, about 10% apart before rebates on the same capacity. The federal discount is the same for both.

Which has the better warranty?

Both are 10-year warranties with different terms. GoodWe's Lynx F G2 covers hardware materials only in years six to ten; Fox ESS's EQ4800 warranty is throughput-based. Compare the documents for the exact models quoted.

Can I add a GoodWe battery to a Fox ESS inverter?

Usually not. Each is designed to pair with its own maker's hybrid inverters. Check compatibility for the exact models before you buy.
