Is a home battery worth it on a rural Victorian property?

Aussie Solar Info · Updated 4 November 2026 · Sources listed below

In country Victoria a battery does two jobs: it keeps the solar you can't export, and it can keep the lights on when the line goes down. Here is how to tell whether it pays for your place.

The short answer

What it saves

For a Victorian household with existing solar, a $500 a quarter bill and about 20kWh a day, our calculator puts a 10kWh battery's saving at about $874 a year, paying back in about 6 years with a competitive quote[1]. The federal discount takes about $2,520 off for installs to December 2026, and it falls from January[2].

Why export limits change the maths

Powercor is lowering the maximum fixed export limit to 1.5kW per phase[3], and AusNet's single-wire lines are held under 3.5kW[4]. With a low limit, solar you can't use or export is simply lost. A battery stores it for the evening instead.

Backup for outages

A battery can run the house in an outage only if it is set up for it, and not every system can[5]. Backup may cover the whole home or just chosen circuits, such as lights, the fridge or a water pump[5]. An islanding system lets the panels recharge the battery by day, which matters in a long outage[5].

What to check

Why two quotes for the same job can be thousands apart

Installers price the same system very differently. These are the installed price ranges our calculator works from, before rebates: the low end is what a competitive installer charges, and the high end is what a poor quote looks like.

SystemCompetitive quotePoor quote
6.6kW solar system$8,000$10,000
10kWh battery$7,650$13,500
About 15kWh battery$12,100$18,000

Two minutes of questions about your bill, roof and routine gives you the system size, what it should cost after rebates and what it saves. Your report shows on screen straight away, and no installer sees anything unless you ask.

Common questions

Will a battery work in a blackout on a farm?

Only if it is set up for backup. Ask which circuits are covered and whether solar can recharge it during an outage.

How much does a battery save in Victoria?

About $874 a year for a 10kWh battery added to existing solar, on our calculator, for a typical household.

Does a low export limit make a battery more worth it?

Usually yes. Solar you can't export is lost unless you store it.
