Solar in rural NSW: Essential Energy, export limits and loans

Aussie Solar Info · Updated 4 November 2026 · Sources listed below

Most of country and regional NSW is on Essential Energy's network. Its export rules, today's low feed-in tariffs and the state's interest-free loan all shape what a system is worth on a rural property.

The short answer

Essential Energy's export rules

Essential Energy is the distributor for country and regional NSW[1]. It is introducing flexible export limits of up to 10kW per phase for new and upgraded systems from late 2026, alongside the NSW emergency backstop. They are optional, with a low fixed limit as the alternative[2].

Flexible exports rely on the inverter staying connected, so on a property with patchy internet, ask what happens to your limit when it drops out.

Exports earn little

IPART's benchmark for solar feed-in tariffs in 2026-27 is 3.4 to 6.5c a kWh, down from 4.8 to 7.3c, and retailers don't have to offer it[3]. Power you use yourself is worth far more: about 30c a kWh on our calculator's NSW rates[4]. Size the system for your own use, not for exports.

Paying for it

Outages and backup

Long rural lines can mean more outages. Standard solar switches off when the grid goes down; a battery set up for backup can keep chosen circuits running[7]. Ask for it at the design stage[8].

What to ask before you buy

Why two quotes for the same job can be thousands apart

Installers price the same system very differently. These are the installed price ranges our calculator works from, before rebates: the low end is what a competitive installer charges, and the high end is what a poor quote looks like.

SystemCompetitive quotePoor quote
6.6kW solar system$8,000$10,000
10kWh battery$7,650$13,500
About 15kWh battery$12,100$18,000
