Byron Bay sits in the Northern Rivers, inside New South Wales. Quotes and rebate advice written for the Gold Coast do not apply to you, even though it is a short drive away. Your incentives, feed-in rate and loan options are all set at the NSW level, and that is what this calculator uses for a Byron postcode.
NSW retailers pay around 3c per kWh for exported solar, against roughly 1c in Queensland and Victoria. It is still a fraction of the roughly 30c you pay to buy power back, so self-consumption is still where the value is, but exporting hurts a little less here than it does over the border. That difference shows up directly in battery payback: when exports earn more, the gap a battery closes is smaller.
NSW does not run a state rebate on panels the way Victoria does. What it does run is the Home Energy Action interest-free loan, worth up to $15,000 across solar and battery. That changes the cash-flow question rather than the total cost, so it is worth modelling separately from the rebates.
