Is a home battery worth it on a rural NSW property?

Aussie Solar Info · Updated 4 November 2026 · Sources listed below

On a country NSW property a battery earns its keep two ways: storing solar that would otherwise export for a few cents, and backing up the essentials when the line goes down.

The short answer

What it saves

For a NSW household with existing solar, a $500 a quarter bill and about 20kWh a day, our calculator puts a 10kWh battery's saving at about $795 a year[1]. The federal discount takes about $2,520 off for installs to December 2026, falling from January[2].

The gap a battery closes is large: the 2026-27 feed-in benchmark is 3.4 to 6.5c a kWh[3], against about 30c to buy[4].

Paying for it

Backup on a country property

A battery can supply power in an outage only if it is configured to, and backup may cover the whole home or just chosen circuits, like the fridge, lights or a water pump[7]. If your property loses power often, say so before the design is done[8].

Exports and your internet

Essential Energy's flexible export limits, from late 2026, need the system to stay connected; the alternative is a low fixed limit[9]. With a low limit, a battery is the way to keep surplus solar.

Why two quotes for the same job can be thousands apart

Installers price the same system very differently. These are the installed price ranges our calculator works from, before rebates: the low end is what a competitive installer charges, and the high end is what a poor quote looks like.

SystemCompetitive quotePoor quote
6.6kW solar system$8,000$10,000
10kWh battery$7,650$13,500
About 15kWh battery$12,100$18,000

Common questions

How much does a battery save in NSW?

About $795 a year for a 10kWh battery added to existing solar, on our calculator, for a typical household.

Can I use the NSW loan for a battery?

Yes. The Home Energy Saver loan covers rooftop solar and batteries, up to $15,000 at zero interest.

Will a battery keep my farm running in a blackout?

Only if it is set up for backup, and often only on chosen circuits. Ask before you buy.
