Tesla Powerwall home batteries in Australia: where they fit
Tesla Powerwall sits in the premium on this site, which is a statement about price and feature depth rather than about whether the equipment works. The question worth answering is not whether it is good, it is who it suits.
What is different about Victoria
At 30c a unit Victoria sits 4th of 8 on retail price, and one of the lowest feed-in tariffs at 1c, so exporting is close to giving power away and self-consumption carries the entire case. It averages 4.6 peak sun hours a day.
What it is actually chosen for
When someone tells the calculator what matters most to them, these are the answers that bring Tesla Powerwall up:
- Blackout protection
- Smart technology and a good app
- Established brand and reliability
What it costs before rebates
Installed battery pricing on this site is held by capacity, then scaled by tier. Tesla Powerwall is premium, which is a 1.15x multiplier on the value-tier price.
| Capacity | Value tier installed | Tesla Powerwall tier installed |
|---|---|---|
| 10kWh | $7,650 to $13,500 | $8,797 to $15,524 |
| 15kWh | $12,100 to $18,000 | $13,914 to $20,700 |
| 27kWh | $16,470 to $28,000 | $18,940 to $32,199 |
Before the federal battery rebate, which is roughly $252 per usable kWh on the first 14kWh and tapers above that. After it, expect several thousand less.
Where it actually fits
Tesla Powerwall has a narrow profile. It is lifted on 3 priorities, so it suits someone who knows which of those they care about and does not need the rest.
It sits in the premium tier, and premium has to earn its money. A dearer pack stores roughly the same energy and displaces power at the same retail rate, so it does not save more. What it buys is build quality, warranty length, support and features, which are real and are not savings. Anyone selling the premium on payback is selling it wrong.
No particular existing inverter points at Tesla Powerwall, so on a retrofit it competes on its own merits rather than on compatibility. On a new install that matters less, because the inverter is being chosen at the same time.
$2,000 difference.
That is the gap between two quotes for the same 6.6kW system in Victoria, in the same week. Not build quality, not a better job. Overheads, how full the diary is that month, and what the person at your kitchen table thinks you will agree to. On solar with a battery the same gap is $7,900.
Closing that gap is what I do. I already know what installers in your area are quoting this month for this equipment, so I get you the bottom of that range for the same system other companies charge thousands more for. It costs you nothing. The installer pays me, and only if you go ahead, which is why there is no reason for me to push you at a bigger system than you need or at a dearer installer.
Get your own numbers, then get them priced properly
The table above is four example households. Two minutes of questions gets you your system size, what it should cost after rebates in Victoria, and a ten-year projection built on your roof and your usage. Then I find the bottom of that price range for you.
