Alpha ESS vs BYD Battery-Box: which suits your inverter
Alpha ESS and BYD are both batteries that get quoted to households who already have solar and want to keep their inverter. Alpha ESS is value tier on this site and BYD mid tier. Which one makes sense depends mostly on what is already on the wall.

The ranges
Alpha ESS has one of the longest lists of approved series: the SMILE family, including the SMILE-G3, SMILE-M, SMILE-S5 and SMILE-B5, from under 5kWh to over 75kWh usable, and the Stax series at 54 to 87kWh[2]. BYD's Battery-Box HVS runs from 5.12 to 12.8kWh usable and the HVM from 8.28 to 22.08kWh[3], with HVE and HVB series also on the approved list[2].
The warranty
BYD's Australian Battery-Box Premium warranty covers 10 years from the sale date, with 70% of usable energy for 10 years or a minimum throughput, whichever comes first, and it covers a later owner with proof of ownership[3]. Alpha ESS's terms are set per series, so ask for the warranty document for the exact SMILE model on the quote and compare the capacity and throughput it promises.
The inverter decides it
On this site's recommender, BYD is the battery that comes up alongside an existing Fronius system, and Alpha ESS the one for an existing SolarEdge, Huawei or Growatt inverter. Compatibility is model by model, so check it with your installer. If neither pairs with what you have, both quotes will include a new inverter, and the comparison becomes mostly about price.
So which
BYD if you have a Fronius system it pairs with and want to keep it. Alpha ESS if you have one of the inverters it suits, or if you are buying new and price matters: it is about 10% cheaper before rebates on the same capacity on this site's pricing.
Get your own numbers, then get them priced properly
Two minutes of questions gets you the battery size your house actually needs, what it should cost after rebates, and what it saves. Then I find the bottom of that price range for you. No installer sees anything unless you ask.
