BYD Battery-Box in Melbourne: price, warranty and what it pairs with
BYD's Battery-Box is built to pair with other brands' hybrid inverters, so it is one to look at if you already have solar in Melbourne and want to keep your inverter. Here is what it costs, what the warranty says, and what Melbourne's network rules mean for it.
Price in Melbourne
| Brand | Battery | Installed, before rebates | After rebates (VIC) |
|---|---|---|---|
| BYD Battery-Box | 10 kWh | $8,420 to $14,850 | $5,900 to $12,330 |
| BYD Battery-Box | 15 kWh | $13,310 to $19,800 | $9,630 to $16,120 |
| BYD Battery-Box | 27 kWh | $18,120 to $30,800 | $12,630 to $25,310 |
Installed prices from the same calculator the free assessment uses, at BYD's mid tier. The federal discount is the same for any battery of the same usable capacity[1], and Victoria has no state battery rebate open now[2].
The warranty, in BYD's words
BYD's Australian warranty for the Battery-Box Premium HVS and HVM applies to batteries bought and installed in Australia from 1 November 2024, and is given by Shenzhen BYD Electronics. It covers defects in materials and workmanship for 10 years from the sale date on the seller's invoice, and promises that the battery keeps 70% of its usable energy for 10 years or reaches a minimum energy throughput, whichever comes first. For an HVS 10.2, the throughput is 30.82MWh[3].
It covers a later owner who acquires the battery for their own use and can show proof of ownership[3], which is worth knowing if you might sell the house within ten years.
The sizes
The models the warranty covers run from the HVS 5.1 at 5.12kWh usable to the HVS 12.8 at 12.8kWh, and from the HVM 8.3 at 8.28kWh to the HVM 22.1 at 22.08kWh[3]. BYD also has HVE and the newer HVB series on the approved list[4]. For most Melbourne houses the useful range is 10 to 15kWh.
What it pairs with
BYD's Battery-Box is designed to pair with other brands' hybrid inverters, and on this site's recommender it is the battery that comes up alongside an existing Fronius system. Pairing is model by model, so ask for the compatibility listing for your exact inverter. If a quote replaces an inverter you were happy with, it should show that cost on its own line.
Melbourne's export rules and a battery
In Melbourne the distributor, not the retailer, sets how much a house may export, and it does so at pre-approval, before anything is installed. The rules are changing. United Energy's, CitiPower's and Powercor's connection policies for 2026 to 2031 lower the maximum static export limit to 1.5kW per phase and offer flexible exports of up to 10kW per phase instead[5][6][7]. AusNet assesses most household systems online for up to 5kW of export per phase[8]. Jemena's policy allows it to impose a zero export limit on a new or altered connection where the customer asks, or where exports would be likely to breach technical limits and fixing that would cost more than it is worth, but not where the customer uses a dynamic system it has specified[9].
The tighter the export limit, the more of a sunny afternoon's surplus is worth storing rather than sending out, and there is no minimum feed-in tariff in Victoria to fall back on[10]. That is the Melbourne case for a battery in one line. Your distributor's name is on your bill; ask the installer what limit the pre-approval came back with.
Questions for a Melbourne quote
Which Battery-Box model and usable capacity, in writing. Whether it is compatible with your existing inverter, by model. What export limit your network approved at pre-approval. Whether the price is before or after the federal discount, and the install date it assumes, because the discount falls every six months[1].
Get your own numbers, then get them priced properly
Two minutes of questions gets you the battery size your house actually needs, what it should cost after rebates, and what it saves. Then I find the bottom of that price range for you. No installer sees anything unless you ask.
